The local name for kava bowl is Tanoa. Our tanoa is made in Fiji from a native hardwood known as Vesi (Intsia bijuga). This wood is best known for making handicrafts. Large bowls are used for drinking Kava (Yagona), a traditional Fijian drink whereas small bowls are suitable gift ideas for occasions such as Birthdays, Weddings, etc. Tanoa is a traditional carved wooden bowl made in different sizes and designs. Tanoas have a triangular lug (mata) that have holes allowing a string made of coconut husk fibre (magimagi) to be tied. For ceremonial purposes, the string is decorated with white cowrie shells (buli leka) and is laid out along the ground towards the honored guest. It is rolled out on the commencement of the kava ceremony and rolled back at the end of the kava ceremony. Care&Handling: Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat as it can fade the colours and cause the wood to crack. Do not clean with harsh chemicals, wipe gently using a damp cloth or dust using a clean natural brush. To use the tanoa for kava drinking, immerse 3/4 of the bowl in water for a week. The water should be changed daily until it becomes clear. This ensures durability and longevity of the kava bowl.
